Barb Kniss: Celebration of Life

Barbara Brown Kniss, age 93 passed away peacefully on March 27, 2023. Born on April 24, 1929 in Cashmere, WA daughter of Carl and Lee Brown. Predeceased by parents, brother Ted, husband Cdr (USN, RET) Donovan E. Kniss June 29, 1991 and grandson Brian. She is survived by two sons Donovan E Kniss Jr., Lyme, CT and Robert J. Kniss, Phippsburg ME. Daughter-in-law’s Kitty and Beth. Two granddaughters and their spouses Rebecca (Sam) Chandler and Jennifer (Andrew) Richard. Great Grandson Alden Chandler. Four nieces and nephews Karen, Gary, Kevin and Michael. Sister-in-law Phyllis.

Barbara as so many other Submariners Officer wives took up the call of duty. She moved her family multiple times from Hawaii to Connecticut. She was the devoted wife and mother while Sea Duty 6 months of each year called her husband away. She was instrumental in the organization of the Julie Singers (navy wives’ choral group). Across the country she left her influence on a multitude of people who still recall her warmth and kindness.

She taught at North Central High Spokane, WA and at Ledyard High School Ledyard, CT. When the most permanent residence in Gales Ferry began in 1968 Barbara began teaching at Ledyard High school as a ninth grade English teacher. Her influence and motherly demeanor touched many a student and colleague over those many years. She is remembered by many as a positive influence in their lives.

Barbara was an active member of Gales Ferry United Methodist Church, Member of Choir, Staff/ParishCommittee, Lay Leadership, Church Health Team and UM Players where she held major roles for 22 years. She was on staff for 6 years as Parish Assistant for Outreach and Support.
